Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a widespread outage today, October 20, 2025, affecting numerous online platforms. From airline delays to issues in the banking sector, the problem impacted millions of online users worldwide, primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom. While Amazon users wonder when everything will return to normal, get an update on when their services should be fully restored below.

Amazon identified the root cause of the outage as a «major DNS issue». DNS is a domain name system that acts as a kind of internet phone book, converting domain names into IP addresses.

«The major DNS issue has been fully resolved, and most AWS Service operations are now successfully running», - Amazon wrote in an update on their health dashboard at 6:35 AM Eastern Time. «Some requests may be limited as we work on a complete solution. Additionally, some services continue to operate with event delays, such as Cloudtrail and Lambda. While most operations have been restored, requests to launch new EC2 instances (or services that launch EC2 instances, such as ECS) in the US-EAST-1 region still experience elevated error rates. We continue to work on a complete solution. If you are still experiencing issues resolving DynamoDB service endpoints in US-EAST-1, we recommend clearing DNS caches».

Just after 1:00 PM Eastern Time, the Amazon health dashboard announced that they would continue to apply «steps to mitigate load on the network balancer and restore connectivity for most AWS services».

Some Amazon services are still unavailable for many users at the time of publication. For many, the «orders» section in the Amazon app contains a message: «Hmm. We’re still having trouble displaying your orders because something isn’t working».

The rest of the Amazon app has similar messages on its home screen, indicating that updates are currently unable to be loaded due to the outage.

The Amazon outage may be resolved by the end of the day on October 20, but the company insists that the main issue has been «resolved». However, according to computer networking expert Graham Bragg from the University of Southampton, the problem may persist «until the end of the day».

«This morning’s issue affecting Amazon US East caused significant disruptions, with the root cause being a DNS issue — the 'phone book' of the internet that helps computers find each other», - Bragg said, as reported by The Independent. «It affected many services hosted in different regions because Amazon hosts much of its management infrastructure, on which other services depend, in this region».

Noting that the outage is a «significant failure due to how many companies rely on Amazon and the global scale of impact», - Bragg added: «The main issue is now resolved, but it will take some time to propagate across the internet. Amazon servers also have accumulated requests that they will have to deal with, so it is likely that we will see some disruptions in operation until the end of the day».

Several applications and other online platforms were affected during the AWS outage, including Venmo, Snapchat, Ring Doorbell, Asana, and even airlines Delta and United
