Everyone with an account on social networks knows that outages happen. From the recent outage on Facebook and Instagram by Meta last year to a brief issue on X.com earlier this year, disruptions inevitably occur from time to time. But on October 20, 2025, technology users worldwide complained about a major internet outage affecting several applications and platforms, including Amazon AWS, Ring doorbell, and Snapchat. Although Amazon owns Ring, Snapchat is a separate entity, so the outage confused customers in general.

While Snapchat users wait for the app to be restored, we have the latest updates on the massive outage below.

The only known cause of the Snapchat outage today is a major internet outage in several countries, which is still under investigation.

X.com Snapchat support acknowledged the issue by posting a tweet: «We know some Snapchat users are currently experiencing issues using the app — hang tight, we’re looking into it!»

At the time of publication, the number of reported issues using Snapchat on Downdetector had decreased from 22,000 to approximately 10,000, but users complained that their apps still weren’t working.

«My feed is still empty without friends», - one person reported on Downdetector.

Snap Inc. is the owner of Snapchat. As previously noted, the major internet issue today affected Amazon services, but Amazon does not own Snapchat.

Chaos began in the early hours of October 20 when all AWS platforms affected banks, media, and even airlines for a short time. A little later, the problem became clear, and Amazon stated that its customers couldn’t access data stored in DynamoDB because the Domain Name System (DNS) encountered an issue, CNN reports. DNS is a kind of phone book for the internet.

Amazon fixed the DNS issue shortly after 6:30 a.m. Eastern Time. However, the company warned that some regions around the world may still experience errors when loading platforms.

«The main DNS issue has been fully resolved, and most AWS Service operations are now successfully running», - Amazon said in a statement. «Some requests may be limited as we work on a complete solution. In addition, some services continue to work on catching up with events, such as Cloudtrail and Lambda».

Amazon also recommended that customers clear their browser cache settings
