Arizona State University has temporarily suspended head hockey coach Greg Powers amid an investigation into an incident involving team defenseman Matthew Maich, who is hospitalized after suffering a severe heat stroke. This was announced by the university’s athletic director, Graham Rossini, in a statement on September 30.
Maich, who is 21 years old, was hospitalized following an intense practice on August 20, and according to his attorney, he has «zero chance of recovery». Rossini noted that the university is continuing to gather information and believes that the coach’s suspension will help ensure stability within the team.
Earlier, seven players from the hockey team wrote a letter to the university administration requesting the suspension of the entire coaching staff. In the letter, which was sent to university president Michael Crow, the players dispute the findings of the investigation, claiming that Maich did not receive water during practice, which contradicts the information presented in the university’s report.
Assistant coach Mike Corbett will serve as interim head coach when the team opens the season against Lindenwood on October 1. In the letter, the players also mentioned that Coach Powers was not aware of the seriousness of the situation and was not properly trained to recognize and treat heat stroke. The Arizona police investigation into the matter is ongoing.
