Former Arizona State University hockey coach Greg Powers reportedly attempted to dispose of potential evidence after team defenseman Matthew Maich was hospitalized with «zero chance of recovery» following a controversial practice.

According to The Arizona Republic, Powers, 49, allegedly replaced a mobile phone containing videos, photos, text messages, and correspondence among the ASU coaching staff that he was required to preserve. An attorney representing Maich’s family sent a letter to the university regarding the whereabouts of the phone on October 3. In the letter, attorney Leonard Aragon expressed serious concerns about the destruction of evidence, noting that «it is unacceptable that the head coach’s mobile device, who was present at the practice, was not secured».

Aragon also reported that Powers allegedly replaced the phone due to «death threats» he received following the tragedy involving Maich. He demanded that the university determine whether Powers' phone had been «wiped, factory reset, exchanged, or disposed of».

Powers was present when 21-year-old Maich collapsed from heat stroke during an outdoor practice on August 20 on the Tempe campus. Reports indicate that he was not given water during the nearly hour-long session, and his body remained in the sun for several minutes before necessary assistance was provided. Powers was placed on administrative leave on September 30.

In a statement, Powers expressed support for Maich’s family and noted that the incident deeply affected everyone in the program. He endorsed the university’s decision regarding his administrative leave for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the practice.

Maich’s parents, John and Christina, released a statement after Powers was placed on leave, emphasizing that they want the team to have a successful season, but the coaches who conducted the practice on August 20 should be suspended until the independent investigation is completed.

According to The Athletic, Arizona State University is expected to appoint former NHL coach Dave Hakstol as the new head coach of the team. The team opened its season on October 2, splitting two away games against Lindenwood, and also split two home games against Holy Cross over the weekend.
