Greta Thunberg was part of an aid group heading to Gaza and claimed to have been «kidnapped» by the Israeli Defense Forces. As the war in Gaza continued, Thunberg spoke out against Israel’s actions. Below, find out what happened to the activist and how Israel responded.

Thunberg and others were heading to Gaza as part of a humanitarian initiative by the Free Flotilla Coalition (FFC). The group was sailing on a boat named Madlen. They stated that their goal was to distribute necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies to those in need.

Thunberg stated in a pre-recorded video on social media that she and others on the Madlen boat were kidnapped by the Israeli Defense Forces.

«If you see this video, it means we have been detained and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupation forces or forces supporting Israel», - Thunberg said. «I urge all my friends, family, and fellow activists to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and others as soon as possible».

According to Newsweek, FFC warned Madlen passengers of possible detention by Israeli forces and asked them to record messages in advance in case of such an eventuality.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that he ordered the Israeli Defense Forces to prevent Madlen from reaching Gaza, according to the publication. Furthermore, Katz wrote on Twitter that they plan to show Thunberg and other group members videos of attacks on October 7.

«It is fitting that the antisemitic Greta and her supporters see what a terrorist organization Hamas is, which they came to support and work for, the horrors they have committed against women, elderly people, and children, and against whom Israel is fighting to protect itself», - Katz wrote.

The Israeli government also stated that unauthorized attempts to breach its Gaza maritime blockade are «illegal» and «undermine current humanitarian efforts», - according to Newsweek.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Madlen a «selfie yacht» on Twitter along with a video showing FFC members receiving food after being denied entry into Gaza.

«All passengers of the 'selfie yacht' are safe and unharmed», - the ministry wrote on Twitter. «They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over».

Thunberg did not continue her public statement claiming to have been «kidnapped» by Israeli forces. However, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that all Madlen passengers are returning to their countries of origin, according to Newsweek
