Harrison Butker doubled down on his efforts, speaking to local Kansas City media at training camp about his controversial comments made back in May during his speech at Benedictine College graduation ceremony.
«As far as what I said, I prayed about it and thought about it, and I was really intentional in my words».
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker added on Wednesday, speaking to reporters, that his words came «from a place of love».
«I've been in the league for seven years, and I have a platform», - Butker said. «And with that comes people who want me to speak out on what I believe is very important».
In his speech in May at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts college in Atchison, Kansas, Butker said that women receiving their degrees are more likely to be happier getting married and having children, criticized President Joe Biden for his stance on abortions and his handling of the COVID pandemic, and attacked Catholic leaders who, in his words, «impose dangerous gender ideologies on America’s youth», - describing Pride Month as a «mortal sin».
«I only want the best for people; that’s what I was trying to say there. I think people who were in that gym all understood what I was saying».
While video of the ceremony showed a standing ovation, interviews with students showed a more mixed reaction.
El Wilbers, 22, who plans to attend medical school, said she was shocked by Butker’s criticism of priests and bishops and his mention of the LGBTQ+ community, which she described as «awful».
«We need to have compassion for people who have been told their whole lives that the person they love is not right», - Wilbers said.
Cassidy Noyner, 22, who will spend a year teaching before attending law school, said that being a homemaker is «a wonderful choice, [but] it’s also not for everyone».
«One of our concerns was the assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman», - she added. «We, sisters, have dedicated our lives to God and God’s people, including many women we have taught. These women have made a huge difference in the world with their roles as wives and mothers and through their divine gifts in leadership, science, and career»
