A year has passed since jurors found producer Harvey Weinstein guilty of committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree against Miriam Haley, and he has now been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Before the sentencing, Weinstein stated in court, «I'm not a perfect person. I live with a lot of regrets and I sincerely apologize for my actions». Judge Curtis Farber, commenting on his words, noted that Weinstein «had it all. His legacy could have been one of greatness. But he lost it all by assaulting Miriam Haley».
In her emotional testimony, Haley expressed her astonishment that six years after the first conviction, she was back in court. In 2020, she testified against Weinstein, who was found guilty of raping Jessica Mann, but that decision was overturned in 2024. Last year, Haley again testified against Weinstein in a retrial, recalling the events that took place in his apartment in Soho on July 10, 2006. The retrial ended with a mixed verdict: Weinstein was found guilty of a criminal sexual act in the first degree against Haley, but was not found guilty of a similar crime against Kaja Sokola, and the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision in Mann’s case.
In her statement, Haley described the «exhausting and unpleasant process» of testifying in court, including the «demeaning cross-examination» and «online threats». She noted that she «often felt like she was on trial» and that this process had become «the worst decision of her life».
Prosecutor Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. thanked Haley and all the survivors who came to support her, adding that «we should all be moved by their courage and resilience in what was clearly a difficult process».
Weinstein is currently awaiting a new sentencing in California after being found guilty on three counts of rape and sexual assault related to a 2013 incident involving an Italian model in Los Angeles. A hearing date for the case has not yet been set.
