Harvey Weinstein accused of new sexual crimes: all the details

Harvey Weinstein was scheduled to appear in court for a pre-trial hearing on Thursday, September 12, in New York, where prosecutors presented evidence to a grand jury to secure new charges against him for additional allegations of sexual crimes.
Weinstein was convicted in 2020 for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann, resulting in a 23-year prison sentence. In a stunning 4−3 decision in April of this year, the New York Supreme Court overturned Weinstein’s 2020 sexual assault conviction. The court acknowledged that the lower court had made «gross errors» by allowing women who were not directly related to the allegations to testify about separate accusations.
Weinstein was also convicted of rape in a separate trial in Los Angeles in 2022 and sentenced to an additional 16 years, to be served after his prison term in New York. Initially housed at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in New York, he was later transferred to Rikers Island in the Bronx, where he awaits a new trial in November. Weinstein denies all allegations against him.
Here is everything you need to know about the latest events involving the disgraced former Hollywood mogul and the new charges he is facing.
Weinstein was charged with additional sexual crime allegations ahead of his retrial in New York, Manhattan prosecutors said at a hearing on Thursday. The charges will remain sealed until Weinstein’s arraignment, scheduled for September 18, according to the Associated Press.
A previous hearing in the case took place on July 9, where assistant prosecutor Nicole Blumberg indicated that Weinstein could be charged with new crimes for «additional violent sexual assaults».
«We have spoken to several people who claim Weinstein raped them in Manhattan», - said Blumberg, adding that the incidents fall within the statute of limitations for prosecution.
«As we said in 2020, there were women who were not ready to engage in the legal process. Some of these women are now ready to engage», - explained Blumberg.
Weinstein did not attend the hearing on Thursday because he was not allowed to attend due to medical reasons following emergency heart and lung surgery earlier this week.
The retrial is scheduled for November 12.
Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery and remains in a «critical condition», - a source close to the producer told Deadline. ABC News first reported on Monday that Weinstein was «sent to Bellevue Hospital» on Sunday night «due to several medical conditions», - according to a statement from his representatives, Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmaier.
«We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein underwent a procedure and heart surgery [on Monday], but cannot comment further at this time», - the statement continued. «As we have said before, Mr. Weinstein has multiple serious health issues requiring constant treatment. We are grateful to the executive leadership of the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for their prompt action in transferring him to Bellevue Hospital».
Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, told The New York Times that his 72-year-old client had contacted Rothfeld several times over the weekend to report feeling unwell. «This guy is going to die on your watch if you don’t do something», - Aidala said he and Rothfeld wrote in a letter to officials at Rikers and Bellevue before Weinstein was transferred to the hospital.
Rothfeld later confirmed that Weinstein underwent surgery on Monday morning to «remove a significant amount of fluid from his lungs and heart» and is currently in the intensive care unit. After the operation, Weinstein reportedly called Rothfeld and expressed gratitude for being «alive and well».
Weinstein was previously hospitalized in July due to COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs
