HBO has announced the revival of Lena Dunham’s popular sitcom «Girls», - which is set for a limited five-episode season. This was reported by Variety on October 13. Production of the new series will begin in 2027.
Four main actresses will return to the project: Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath, Alison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro, and Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson. Andrew Rannells will also reprise his supporting role as Elijah Krantz. The executive producers of the project will once again include Judd Apatow, along with Dunham, Ilene S. Landress, and Michael P. Cohen.
Dunham noted that the revival was only possible with a specific story they wanted to tell. She admitted that she struggled for a long time to envision the characters in the present day, but after turning forty, they began to «talk» to her.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO, expressed excitement about Dunham’s return and noted that the world has changed since viewers last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah.
The original cast of «Girls» also included Christopher Abbott, Alex Karpovsky, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Jake Lacy. However, Adam Driver and Jenny Connor, whom Dunham mentioned in her memoirs, will not be participating in the new season. Driver, in particular, responded to Dunham’s allegations, stating that he would not comment on the situation.
