Hewlett Packard Enterprise continues its efforts to obtain civil lawsuits totaling up to $ 4 billion from the estate of Mike Lynch, a British technology magnate who drowned on his yacht last month.
In 2022, the High Court of the United Kingdom recognized that the information technology company «has largely succeeded in its civil fraud claims», - as stated in the company’s statement. In February, HPE and Lynch’s lawyers discussed the amount of damages in court. However, Lynch planned to appeal.
Judge Hildyard, who indicated that the damages are likely to be «significantly» less than what HP demanded, is expected to make a decision in the coming months.
«The judge’s decision regarding the damages payable to HPE will be made in due course», - the statement from Hewlett Packard Enterprise said on Monday. «HPE intends to see the process through to the end».
Lawsuits were filed against Lynch and Sushovan Hussain, the former chief financial officer of Autonomy, a software development company founded by Lynch, which was sold to Hewlett Packard in 2011 for $ 11 billion.
Lynch died when his yacht «Bayesian» sank in a storm off Sicily on August 19. Now, his widow Angela Bakares, one of the fifteen rescued, may be held responsible for the damages.
Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, whom he shared with Bakares, were among the six passengers who died in the crash of the 184-foot luxury yacht. Also killed was one crew member, the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas. Lynch had planned to celebrate his acquittal in a separate criminal case in the US on charges of fraud and conspiracy with his family and friends on the yacht.
On Monday, September 2, the Italian news agency ANSA announced that the first autopsies of the bodies of the husband and wife who were among the seven deceased had been conducted. Reports confirmed that Christopher and Neda Morvillo drowned.
Preliminary results of the investigations conducted by Professor Antonella Argo from the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Palermo did not show signs of trauma.
Autopsies for another husband and wife, Jonathan and Judy Blumer, are scheduled for Wednesday, while those for the remaining three victims — Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and chef Thomas — are still pending
