A mother from Georgia, Chloe Jackson-Jones, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the abuse of her adopted 11-year-old son, who escaped from her home by breaking through a wall in a closet and jumping out of a second-story window. Judge Emory Palmer issued the ruling on September 30, after Jackson-Jones pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated assault with family violence and 17 counts of child cruelty.
Prosecutor John Herbert Cranford Jr. told the Newnan Times-Herald that his office would have pushed for a harsher sentence if it had been up to them. He noted that «the punishment prescribed by law is too lenient for this defendant» and expressed a desire for her to serve the full 40 years.
Information about the abuse came to light on July 5, 2023, when the 11-year-old boy was found running down the street by two passersby. Witnesses reported that he appeared frightened and was asking for food. First responders discovered scars and signs indicating prolonged abuse and neglect on the child, according to Law & Crime.
Jackson-Jones was arrested on July 13, 2023, and the boy was placed under the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. The investigation revealed that she had subjected the boy to «torture» after adopting him at the age of 8. Disturbing photos and videos of the boy being abused, including instances of him being tied up, beaten, and humiliated, were found on her mobile phone.
The boy told investigators that he lived with several other children in the home and that Jackson-Jones often encouraged them to mock him during punishments. He explained that he ultimately had to «break through the wall» in the closet and «jump out of the second-story window to escape».
