Hoda Kotb announced that she is leaving the TODAY show after nearly 20 years as co-host. In the letter to her colleagues, the journalist admitted that her «heart is in different places».
«I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s painful», - Hoda wrote. «And all of you are the reason. They say two things can be true at the same time, and I feel that so deeply right now. I love you all, and for me, it’s time to leave the show. My time at NBC has been the longest professional romance of my life. But only because you were with me on this twenty-year adventure».
The long-time NBC employee has been working for the network for 26 years. Before she got her role on TODAY, Hoda worked on the program Dateline for ten years.
«I've been weighing this decision for a long time — am I really ready?» Hoda asked in her letter. «But my sixtieth birthday on the Plaza felt like a shift to me. Like a huge, joyful 'YES', you’re ready! I saw it all so clearly: my television career has been endlessly meaningful, a new decade of my life ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve more of my time».
Hoda shares her daughters, Haley Joy and Hope Catherine, with her ex Joel Schiffman.
«I will miss you all immensely, but I am ready and excited», - she concluded.
Hoda cited her age as the main reason she decided to leave the show. And after news of her departure became known, the journalist appeared in an emotional episode of TODAY.
«I realized it was time for me to turn the page at 60 and try something new», - Hoda emphasized. «I remembered standing outside, looking at this beautiful crowd of people with these wonderful signs, and thought, 'This is what the top of the wave feels like for me.' And I thought, it doesn’t get any better, and decided that now is the time for me to move on».
Hoda is not officially leaving the show this year. In her letter, the TV host noted that she plans to work until the beginning of 2025.
«Since I will be working until the beginning of 2025, we still have plenty of time to talk about what lies ahead», - she noted, promising to remain in the «NBC family» in the future. «But one thing I know for sure right now: everything will be fine. … I will be there. How can I not be? Family is family, and you will always be a part of mine».
