Learn more about him below.
Jose Ramon Andres Puerta was born in July 1969 in Mieres, Asturias, Spain. Growing up outside of Barcelona, Jose enrolled in culinary school at the age of 15. He studied at the School of Restaurants and Hotels in Barcelona, according to PBS, and trained in Michelin-starred restaurants, including El Bulli with the world-renowned master chef and friend Ferran Adria. He came to the United States, working in the restaurants of Proximo Rob Wilder and Roberto Alvarez. Leading the kitchen at Jaleo, Jose helped create one of the first critically and commercially successful tapas restaurants in the United States and deserves recognition for introducing Americans to avant-garde and traditional Spanish cuisine.
Jose is the founder of World Central Kitchen, a 15-year-old non-profit organization.
«In 2010, my wife Patricia and I dreamed of starting World Central Kitchen», - Jose wrote on the World Central Kitchen mission page. «We envisioned an organization that would use food to strengthen communities and economies, and for many years we saw amazing impact through our clean cookstoves initiative, culinary training programs, and social enterprises. But we never imagined that one day we would be answering calls in Puerto Rico and around the world to serve food in the aftermath of disasters — and we quickly learned that food is a powerful tool for community recovery in times of crisis and beyond».
World Central Kitchen was instrumental in aiding Puerto Rico when the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017, according to Washingtonian, and Jose became a «humanitarian hero» of the nation during this crisis. Whenever a hurricane made landfall, World Central Kitchen was there, offering assistance. It continued to help during the COVID-19 pandemic, when American food banks predicted a $ 1.4 billion shortfall.
In 2010, Jose taught a course on culinary physics at Harvard, according to The Washington Post. In 2012, he was appointed dean of Spanish studies at the International Culinary Center. That same year, he taught at George Washington University.
In 2016, Jose planned to open a restaurant called Topo Atrio in the newly renovated Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. But after Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president, lamenting illegal Mexican immigrants, Jose withdrew the contract. Trump sued Jose, and the chef responded with a counterclaim, according to The Washington Post. Although Trump boasted that he never settles lawsuits (although he does repeatedly, as noted by The Washington Post), he and Jose reached a settlement in 2017. The terms were not disclosed, and Jose continued to be a vocal critic of Trump.
In 2021, Jeff Bezos awarded Jose $ 100 million to support his work with World Central Kitchen.
After his space flight on July 20, 2021, the founder of Amazon introduced the Courage and Civility Award — a philanthropic initiative that provides a $ 100 million award for donation to charitable or non-profit organizations of choice. The first nominees were Van Jones of CNN and humanitarian chef Jose.
«I am so grateful. I am very thankful for this award and incredible support from you, Jeff, and the entire Bezos family», - Jose said during the event.
«Let's feed the world», - says Andres
