In 2009, the film «Orphan» became a cult classic and a unique horror movie — it’s a film about a family that adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl named Esther, who turns out to be a cold-blooded 33-year-old woman with dwarfism, pretending to be a child. Now Hulu is releasing «Good American Family».

The mini-series is told from different perspectives to «explore issues of perspective, prejudice, and trauma», - according to Hulu’s description. The show focuses on a Midwestern couple who adopts a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism, «but as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, a mystery arises around her age and origin, and they slowly begin to suspect that she may not be who she claims to be».

«As they protect their family from the daughter they have come to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and understand what her future will bring in a confrontation that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and in court», - the description reads.

The first two out of eight episodes of «Good American Family» will be available to watch on Hulu on March 19, 2025. A new episode will be released every week.

The two main stars of «Good American Family» are former «Grey's Anatomy» participant Ellen Pompeo and «Creep» and «The Morning Show» star Mark Duplass playing Christine and Michael Barnett, respectively.

Actress Imogen Poots plays the role of Natalie Grace. Guest appearances also include Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarah Blue, and Jenny O’Hara.

According to Hulu’s description of the show, «Good American Family» is inspired by «chilling stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism».

The truth behind the mini-series lies in the real story of the Barnett family, who shared their perspective on adopting Natalie Grace in the ID documentary series «The Mysterious Case of Natalie Grace». Natalie lives with a genetic disorder known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which affects a person’s physical growth.

Michael and Christine adopted Natalie in 2010 and accused her of being an adult woman pretending to be a child. Two years later, the Barnetts successfully petitioned the court to change Natalie’s birthdate on her birth certificate to 1989, legally changing her age from 8 to 22 at the time.

In 2013, the Barnett family left Natalie in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, and moved to Canada. Christine and Michael then faced criminal charges of neglect of a dependent in 2019. However, Michael’s charges were dismissed in 2022, and Christine’s in 2023.

Prosecutors in the neglect case found Natalie’s biological mother in Ukraine and found medical records from Ukraine confirming Natalie’s claim that she was born in 2003, not 1989 as the Barnetts claimed.

Antwon and Cynthia Mans took Natalie in after seeing how difficult it was for her to live alone in Indiana. According to PEOPLE magazine, Natalie left the Mans to live with Nicole and Vince DePaul, who tried to adopt Natalie in 2009 but were rejected.

Currently, Natalie lives in upstate New York with the DePauls, according to PEOPLE. Nicole told the publication that Natalie was diagnosed with a behavioral disorder known as reactive attachment disorder (RAD), which is common in children who have spent time in foster care.

«Has she done strange things in the past? Yes», - Nicole noted. «[But] when you take a child, you take them as your own. You don’t just get rid of them when they don’t fit into your puzzle»
