Madison Police Chief Shawn Barnes said at a press conference that the shooter was Samantha, who is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot. He also addressed rumors about a supposed manifesto and Samantha’s possible transgender status, saying he would like people to «set aside their personal biases».
«I don’t know if [the shooter] was transgender or not», - Barnes said. «I don’t think anything that happened today has anything to do with how she or he or they might want to identify themselves. And I would like people to set aside their personal biases… Whether she, he, they are transgender, that may come out later, but for us right now, today, literally eight hours after the mass shooting at a school in Madison, it doesn’t matter at this point».
Barnes added that the police have not confirmed that the viral manifesto belonged to Samantha.
Jeff is the father of Natalie, known as Samantha. Earlier this year, Jeff posted a photo on Facebook in which his daughter appears to be aiming a gun in an open field, according to Newsweek.
According to multiple sources, Melissa is presumably Samantha’s mother. Neither she nor her husband, Jeff, have publicly commented on the shooting at the Christian academy «Abundant Life».
Hours after the shooting, Madison police searched the Rupnow family’s home. Law enforcement officials noted that they are not currently planning to press charges against Samantha’s parents, according to CNN
