New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged by federal prosecutors after a corruption investigation, making him the first mayor in the city’s history to be charged while in office.

The news came after weeks of raids, subpoenas, and resignations of top officials, leading to a crisis in the city government. Although the specific charges Adams will face remain unclear, prosecutors plan to announce them on Thursday, according to the New York Times.

«I always knew that if I stood up for the residents of New York, I would become a target — and a target I have become», - said the 64-year-old mayor in a statement from Gracie Mansion, published late on Wednesday, indicating that he will remain in office despite the charges. «If I am charged, I am innocent, and I will fight this with every drop of my strength and spirit».

Here is everything you need to know about Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Adams.

Gracie Mansion — the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.

Built in 1799, the mansion originally served as a private home before becoming the mayor’s residence in 1942. Since then, it has hosted numerous official events, receptions, and ceremonies. Owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and managed by the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, the mansion combines historical architecture with modern amenities, serving as a symbol of the mayor’s office and the city itself. It is also a member of the Historic House Trust.

The most recent residents of Gracie Mansion were former Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio and his family, who lived there from 2014 to 2021. Before them, several other mayors and their families lived in the mansion, including Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani.

Gracie Mansion is located in Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Specifically, it can be found on 88th Street and East End Avenue.

Federal agents visited Gracie Mansion early on Thursday morning, just hours after it was revealed that Mayor Adams had been charged, a fact confirmed by Alex Spiro, a private attorney hired by Adams.

«Federal agents showed up at Gracie Mansion this morning in an attempt to create a spectacle (again) and take [his] phone (again)», - Spiro said in a statement. «He has not been arrested, and he looks forward to his day in court». The FBI typically conducts raids early in the morning to obtain evidence they believe they could not obtain voluntarily, as described by Spiro.

The raid included nearly a dozen men and women in suits, some of whom carried briefcases, backpacks, or sports bags. They reportedly seized an electronic device that Spiro claimed «they would gladly have turned over».

The investigation is being led by Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is partially focused on the mayor’s ties to Turkey.

Earlier, after the announcement that Adams had been charged, barricades were quickly set up outside the mayor’s residence by the New York City Police Department.

If Mayor Adams resigns or is unable to continue his duties, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams will become the Acting Mayor of New York City. Nonpartisan special elections will then be held to fill the position
