He continues, «Today, it all comes down to attracting the attention of a huge audience, which is also important. However, films that remain fresh in the minds of viewers for many years are those that somehow touched them. Therefore, cinematographers must also focus on creating meaningful cinema that can transcend boundaries and reach a wider audience worldwide».
Peter Zerzan, who earned a degree in political science and initially worked as a political organizer, traveling to cities in the Midwest such as Gary, Allentown, Cleveland, and Flint to support campaigns and social causes, made the decision in 2017 to deeply immerse himself in the world of cinematography due to his passion for cinema. He says that in an age of distraction, it is important to create thoughtful films that can change the entertainment sphere in more than one aspect.
He emphasizes how his experience as a political organizer taught him a lot about people and communication, which, in his opinion, greatly helped him in the process of making films. Since switching careers, Peter Zerzan has written and directed two short films, one of which was shown at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in 2021. He is currently working on his third short film, continuing to hone his craft and skills in cinematography.
Peter Zerzan believes that meaningful storytelling is not only an artistic choice but also a way to reconnect with the audience in an age of widespread distraction. «Viewers, especially young people, mostly follow trends, watch what people are talking about, watch these movies, and forget. However, it is time to change this trend and bring meaningful cinema that they will not forget. Today, films should be more about stories that reflect a part or the whole of society, something that can teach people and make them feel obliged to go to the cinema to watch».
The emerging cinematographer also emphasizes the importance of preparation. He believes that true inspiration comes from planning for the future. He says that most cinematographers get stuck on set, trying to be the most creative, but creativity thrives when the foundations are laid in advance.
