An engineer from Ivy League is suspected of shooting at the CEO of UnitedHealthcare

Engineer Luigi Mandjione, educated at Ivy League, was named as a person interested in shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson was shot in New York on December 4, 2024, before attending an investor conference for his company. After a five-day manhunt, police apprehended Mandjione at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities found a gun and fake identification on Mandjione.
«A man was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, this morning. He has been identified as Luigi Nicholas Mandjione», - said New York Chief Detective Joseph Kenny in a statement. «He is a 26-year-old man, born and raised in Maryland. We know he has ties to San Francisco, California, and his last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has no prior arrest history in New York».
New York Mayor Eric Adams added that Mandjione is a «person of interest in the Thompson case», - stating that Mandjione «matches the identification description we were looking for» and «was in possession of several items that [authorities] believe will link him to this incident».

According to various sources, Mandjione attended a private boys' school in Baltimore, Maryland, called Gilman School. The school’s website advertises: «The pursuit of excellence begins here». Tuition and fees at the school for high school students start at $ 37,000 per year.
CBS News reported that Mandjione was the valedictorian of his class in 2016.
In response to Mandjione’s arrest, Gilman Headmaster Henry P.A. Smyth wrote in an email received by CNN: «These are deeply troubling news against the backdrop of an already horrific situation. Our hearts go out to all affected by this».
Mandjione went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, computer, and information sciences, according to his LinkedIn profile, which apparently belongs to him. Mandjione also studied mathematics.
During his time at UPenn — an Ivy League university — Mandjione worked as a project manager for the university’s video game development program from 2016 to 2020, according to his LinkedIn. In 2019, he was a teaching assistant in the «recitation committee».
Mandjione worked as a data engineer at TrueCar, Inc, in Santa Monica, California, for four years, according to his LinkedIn profile. However, his LinkedIn page indicates that he lived in Hawaii
