O.J. Simpson’s condition rapidly deteriorated in his final days, according to the executor of his will and lawyer Malcolm LaVergne. The lawyer was vocal about the death of the late ex-football star and provided insight into Simpson’s final moments in various interviews.
According to LaVergne, Simpson’s health took a sharp turn for the worse immediately after Easter. «I went and saw him that Friday, and he could barely get words out», - the lawyer told Us Weekly on Tuesday, April 16. «He could ask for water», - he added. «He could decide if he wanted to watch women’s tennis or golf. But he just laid in bed. He just rested comfortably».
LaVergne also claimed that a doctor told Simpson on April 5 that he «wouldn't be long for this world. It’s terminal», - even though Simpson «thought he had beaten» prostate cancer.
«He was an old man, so cancer treatment makes you sick in other ways», - the lawyer further explained. «He had pneumonia, and he couldn’t do experimental or trial procedures».
When Simpson learned that his health was declining, he insisted, «I'm not going to die in a hospital. I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’ll take my chances at home».
«People started flying in from all over, friends, family», - LaVergne added. As for Simpson’s children — Arnelle, Jason, Sydney, Justin, and Aaren (who died at age 1 from accidental drowning) — they prefer to keep everything «private», - emphasized LaVergne.
«The family has always been private. The kids have always been private», - he explained. «They remain private, and their feelings and mixed emotions are really the same as anyone else who has lost a loved one to a long-term illness».
The lawyer also described how lively and healthy Simpson seemed just a few weeks before his death. According to the lawyer, he visited Simpson in March and saw the former athlete «sitting on the couch, drinking beer, eating well», - and «I didn’t think this was a man who was going to die soon».
During a separate interview with the Associated Press, the lawyer insisted that Simpson was «lively, lively, and calm» last month. He also noted that Simpson’s family currently has no plans for a public memorial.
Simpson passed away on April 10, his children announced via X (formerly known as Twitter). He was 76 years old and succumbed to prostate cancer. In the following days, LaVergne drew attention with his controversial remarks about Ron Goldman’s family. Goldman was a friend of Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown, both of whom were killed in the 1990s. Although Simpson was acquitted of their murders, he was later found responsible for their deaths and presumably still owes money to the Goldman family
