One of the most popular tourist destinations in North Carolina, the historic Biltmore Estate, has shared updates after significant damage caused by Hurricane Helen.
On September 28, the hurricane brought unprecedented flooding and strong winds, damaging low-lying buildings and infrastructure across the western part of North Carolina. As a result, the estate, known for its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens, temporarily closed.
Here’s everything you need to know about when this attractive place, which welcomes 1.4 million visitors a year, will reopen.
Employees shared on Saturday that the estate, built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890s, plans to reopen on November 2 to «celebrate the joy of the holiday season together» during its beloved Christmas at Biltmore tradition.
«For over 125 years, Biltmore has borne witness to the resilience of this community. The compassion and determination of our region grow stronger every day under the weight of this storm. Thanks to the incredible work of many generous individuals, recovery is happening around us», - the message said.
The 8,000-acre estate suffered significant wind damage in its wooded areas, which make up a large part of the property. Low-lying areas, such as the farm, experienced significant flooding and building destruction, according to employees.
«Bringing guests back to the estate provides critical support to our community, and we hope to welcome you very soon», - the message concluded, also providing a link for more information on how to help the community.
Christmas at Biltmore — typically from November to January — is a magical experience that transforms the estate into a winter wonderland. Visitors can explore the magnificent mansion adorned with intricate decorations, including a towering Christmas tree and stunning floral displays.
The holiday season also includes candlelight tours, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of the mansion illuminated by soft lights. Outside, the gardens sparkle with holiday lights and seasonal decorations, creating a picturesque backdrop. Special events such as wine tastings and live music enhance the festive atmosphere, making it the perfect place for families and holiday enthusiasts.
Last year, the Biltmore Estate served as the setting for the Hallmark movie «Christmas at Biltmore». The film stars Lucy Collins as a screenwriter who lands her dream job when she is hired to write a script for a remake of her favorite holiday movie, «His Merry Bride».
Hurricane Helen claimed the lives of at least 95 people in North Carolina, with another 30 people still missing as of October 21. The storm brought historic rains, floods, and landslides in the state’s mountains, leading to widespread destruction in the weeks following the disaster
