Over the past few decades, American presidential elections have always featured Biden, Clinton, or Bush. But since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race this year, for the first time in election history, none of these surnames will be present. Biden, 81, previously ran for president in 1988 and then again in 2008.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan chose George Bush Sr. as his vice-presidential candidate, and they won. Eight years later, Bush became president. In 1992, Bill Clinton defeated Bush. By 2000, George W. Bush ran for president and won, serving two terms until 2008. In the same year, Bill’s wife, Hillary Clinton, ran for president for the first time against Barack Obama, and then again in 2016 against Donald Trump.

On Sunday, July 21, Biden made the historic decision to drop out of the presidential race and not seek re-election. His decision came amid public calls from Democrats and celebrities urging Biden to withdraw from the Democratic nomination. Many pointed to his age as the main issue.

«It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while my intention was to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country for me to step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president until the end of my term», - Biden wrote in his public letter to the national community. «I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America cannot do — when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America».

The Clintons and Obamas publicly endorsed Harris and thanked Biden for his service to the country.

Biden also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s candidate. Although the party has not yet confirmed her nomination, Harris promised that she will «earn and win».

One day down. 105 to go. Together we will win.

One day after Biden announced his decision, Harris shared through Twitter that she is heading to Delaware to speak with her staff on their first day on the campaign trail.

«One day down. 105 to go. Together we will win», - she wrote
