Historic decision: Joe Biden refuses to run for re-election

In one of the most historic moments in American history, President Joe Biden has decided to not run for president in 2024. Several weeks after many celebrities, politicians, and other public figures called on Biden to not run for re-election, some of them reacted to the president’s announcement on Sunday, July 31, including former U.S. President Barack Obama.
«Joe Biden has been one of America’s most significant presidents, as well as a dear friend and partner to me», - wrote the former U.S. president in his official statement. «Today we are reminded once again that he is a patriot of the highest order».
Obama also noted that President Biden «led us away from four years of chaos, lies, and division that characterized the administration of Donald Trump».
«I also know that Joe has never shied away from a fight», - acknowledged Obama. «For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the baton to a new candidate is surely one of the most difficult moments in his life. But I know he would not have made this decision if he did not believe it was right for America. This is a testament to Joe Biden’s love for the country — and a historical example of a sincere public servant who once again puts the interests of the American people above his own, which future generations of leaders should follow».
In the conclusion of his statement, Obama expressed gratitude on behalf of his wife, Michelle Obama, to Joe and Jill Biden for courageously and boldly leading us in these dangerous times — and for their commitment to the ideals of freedom and equality on which this country was founded.
The Clintons released a joint statement in support of Biden’s historic decision. Bill and Hillary noted that they «feel honored to join the president in supporting Vice President Harris» and acknowledged that they «will do everything they can to support her».
