Patti Mallette’s story: from a difficult childhood to supporting her son Bieber
9 october 2025 в 21:37
Justin Bieber has long been one of the defining voices of pop music, with eight number one singles, over 150 million records sold, and 22 Grammy nominations (including two wins). From his early days as a YouTube sensation to a full-fledged global icon, Bieber’s journey has been as public as it has been unpredictable. At 31, he continues to evolve as an artist and as a person.
Much of this evolution is tied to the complex, often tender relationship he shares with his mother, Pattie Mallette. In 2014, after his arrest for driving under the influence, Justin admitted in an interview with Billboard that their relationship was «nonexistent» for a period, citing shame and distance. Over the years, they slowly rebuilt trust and attachment. But in September 2025, Pattie once again caught media attention by posting a heartfelt prayer on Instagram, asking God to «heal every wound» in her son’s heart and life. Two weeks later, Justin responded with a sarcastic comment about a «twisted pinky» from playing ping-pong.
Their mother-son dynamic has never been simple, filled with ups, tensions, faith, and reconciliation. Below is a look at Pattie through Justin’s eyes and how their relationship has changed over time.
Justin’s mother was born in Ontario on April 2, 1975. Pattie’s father left the family when she was just three years old, and her life became hellish. «As a teenager, I started experimenting with drugs, alcohol [and crime] to numb the pain… I was drunk or high almost from the moment I woke up until I went to bed», - she said on the Canadian Christian talk show 100 Huntley Street in 2008. «I left home when I was 15. I lived a life of sin, drugs, alcohol, and theft».
The downward spiral ended in a horrific way. «I tried to commit suicide by standing in front of a truck», - Pattie added. «I ended up in a psychiatric hospital for attempted suicide».
Pattie was a lonely teenager when she welcomed her superstar child into the world on March 1, 1994. Although Pattie lived a clean life free of drugs and alcohol, she still struggled financially. «As a single mom [I would sometimes say], 'I don’t know how I’m going to feed Justin,'» she explained on 100 Huntley Street.
At one point, Pattie dreamed of becoming the next Bachelorette, handing out roses on the popular reality show ABC The Bachelorette. Watching the show’s finale almost a decade ago, Pattie fell in love and cried as she watched Sean Lowe propose, prompting her to think, «Who will be the next Bachelorette? Maybe me? Hmmm…» she tweeted.
In her 2012 memoir «Nowhere But Up», - Pattie revealed that she was sexually assaulted in childhood and by several people in her teenage years. Some of the abusers were family friends or relatives. Pattie describes the constant abuse as so frequent that «it began to seem normal». Not only were men abusive towards her, she also recalls a «girl from school» who «tried to teach [her] pleasure».
Justin’s mother definitely approved of his rekindled relationship with Selena Gomez. «Pattie and Selena have always been close. Pattie adores her and sees her as her own daughter. She was always there for Selena during her attraction to Justin», - a source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY when they were together. The insider added, «She approves of Selena and advises her to stay true to herself. Pattie and Selena pray together, and it has really bonded them over the years».
These days, Pattie also shows the same love and support to Justin’s wife, Hailey Bieber (formerly Baldwin). She often praises her daughter-in-law on social media, publicly celebrating her birthday with a touching message that reads, «HAPPY BIRTHDAY @haileybaldwin! I LOVE YOU! I’m so #GRATEFUL to have you as a daughter!!»
