Paris is known as the «City of Love», - and this reputation was confirmed by Olympian Gianmarco Tamberi. The Italian athlete lost his wedding ring during the opening ceremony when he swam across the River Seine on July 26.
The 32-year-old high jumper and flag bearer representing Italy at the Paris 2024 Olympics lost his precious ornament. In response, he used heartfelt words to apologize to his wife Chiara Bontempi Tamberi and declare his love for her, without having a physical symbol of their marriage.
The Italian love story continued with a post on Instagram published on July 27. Gianmarco wrote to his beloved in his native language: «Forgive me, my love, I regret it so much. Too much water, too many lost kilograms in the last few months, or maybe unstoppable enthusiasm for what we were doing. Maybe all three things, just what I heard as she passed, I saw as she flew… I watched her until I saw her bounce inside the boat. Glittering hope… But, unfortunately, the bounce was in the wrong direction, and, hovering more than a thousand times in the air, I saw her sink into the water, as if it was the only place she wanted to be. Several moments that lasted an eternity».
His deep love for his wife poured into the rest of his poetic post, where he noted: «She will remain forever at the bottom of the river in the city of love, flying away as I tried to raise the Italian tricolor flag as high as possible during the opening ceremony of the most important sporting event in the world».
Gianmarco speculated that this could be a sign to renew their marriage. «I think yesterday’s misstep could have a huge poetic side… and we will have another reason, as you always asked, to renew our vows and get married again. I love you, my love. May it be auspicious to return home with even more gold!!!» he concluded his message.
Chiara, who collaborated on the post he published, commented in Italian with crying and heart emojis: «Only you can turn something like this into something romantic».
The couple has been married for almost two years, and despite the loss, they are able to come together and hopefully see Gianmarco earn another precious ornament. He won gold, taking first place in the high jump competition at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics alongside Mutaz Barshim
