Olympian Thomas Checcon had an interesting experience at the 2024 Paris Games.
The 23-year-old Italian swimmer not only became the hero of newspaper headlines, earning a gold medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke and the «thirst traps» created around him, but also became known thanks to a viral photo of him sleeping in the Olympic village.
The bronze medalist was photographed with Saudi Olympic rower Hussein Alireza, who posted the photo on his Instagram stories with the caption «rest today, conquer tomorrow». The photo attracted a lot of attention, eventually leading to Thomas noticing it. «Oh come on, everyone sent me this photo. I see it on social media, TikTok… It’s just a dream, everyone’s going crazy over it», - he told Access Hollywood.

This happened shortly after the Olympian commented on the poor conditions provided by the organization. According to The Sun, he expressed: «There is no air conditioning in the village, it’s hot, the food is bad… Many athletes are moving out because of this reason: it’s not an excuse or justification, it’s a reality that maybe not everyone knows about».
He also admitted that the inability to sleep affected his performance in the 200-meter backstroke final. «I'm sorry I didn’t make it to the final, but I was too tired. It’s hard to sleep both at night and during the day. Here I’m really struggling between the heat and the noise», - he said.
Apparently, the beds feel like cardboard, but they were implemented to help the environment. Although it is done for a good cause, some athletes have complained about how uncomfortable they are. This issue was raised in 2021 when American track athlete Paul Chelimo tweeted about it, saying: «The beds will only withstand the weight of one person to avoid situations outside of sports. At this point, I’ll have to start practicing how to sleep on the floor», - according to Forbes.
Comments about the conditions in the village continued with a statement from the head of the British Olympic Association, Andy Anson, who shared that the food is not enough to meet the daily needs of the athletes. «There is a lack of some products: eggs, chicken, some carbohydrates, and the quality of the food, with raw meat, is served to the athletes», - he said, as reported by The Sun
