Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi had a difficult Olympic journey this time, starting with losing his wedding ring in the Seine River and ending with vomiting blood before the final event.
The 32-year-old Olympian finished in 11th place on Saturday, August 10, during the high jump final, shortly after announcing on Instagram that he had been hospitalized due to kidney colic. This health issue affected his performance, resulting in a height of 2.22 meters. He shared: «The pain I felt this morning, despite its strength, is nothing compared to what I feel inside. Even what was my last certainty is going to disappear».
He continued, noting: «All I dreamed of on this day, except to experience such a nightmare».
Reflecting on his health problems and loss, he wrote in a separate post: «I was able to overcome fate once after that injury in 2016, but this time, unfortunately, I really think it won. I am silent, truly, so sorry».
The 2024 Games were the second Olympic Games for Gianmarco, as he missed the tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He made his Olympic debut in London in 2012 and returned for a second time at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where he won gold in the high jump competition.
His battle with kidney colic occurred shortly after he lost his wedding ring during the opening ceremony. This incident led the high jumper to write a love note to his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi, which went viral worldwide. In the post, he expressed: «It will remain forever on the riverbeds of love, flying away when I tried to raise the Italian tricolor as high as possible during the opening ceremony of the most important sporting event in the world».
He added: «I think yesterday’s misstep can have a huge poetic side… and we will have another reason, as you always asked, to renew our vows and get married again. I love you, my love. May it be auspicious to return home with even more gold!»
