Viewers who tuned in to the BET Awards ceremony this year noticed that Usher’s speech, dedicated to his lifetime achievement award, was mysteriously muted. Now the network has apologized for the sound error, calling it a «glitch» in a new statement.
«The celebration of global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and his acceptance speech was an honor», - the network said in its statement on July 1, obtained by Entertainment Tonight. «Due to a sound glitch during the live broadcast, parts of his speech were accidentally muted. We sincerely apologize to Usher, as we could not be more grateful for his participation in The Biggest Night in Culture».
BET added that everyone «can watch his full uninterrupted speech on BET platforms and today’s BET encore».
The awards ceremony aired on Sunday, June 30, and honored the «Yeah!» hitmaker at the end of the prestigious event with a lifetime achievement award. Several artists took the stage to perform a tribute to Usher, including Keke Palmer, Coco Jones, Chloe Bailey, and others.
At the beginning of his acceptance speech, Usher was censored after swearing, but the sound repeatedly cut out. Only the audience was able to hear him that evening, and the artist shared some emotional insights he had made from life. In one part of his speech, he told fans, «I've lived long enough to understand that you have to have a forgiving heart to understand the true traps and difficulties of a black man in America».
Usher also noted that his father, who was absent for most of his life, «made a lot of choices, and one of them probably hurt and helped me at the same time — to stay on the sidelines».
«That's why I say this is the year of the father, when all fathers should stand up for their sons and daughters and be the man they need», - said the singer of «DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love». «You have to be ready to forgive, friends. … I’m telling you, you’re standing in front of a man who had to forgive a man who never showed up. And look what I did with that! Look what I was able to bring. That’s real. That’s what makes us human. That’s what makes us men and women. I thank you all»
