One of the most popular American retail chains, JCPenney, has started closing some of its stores since 2024. In light of recent changes in the economy and general business trends, shoppers are wondering if JCPenney is closing for good. Therefore, fans of the chain want to know if it is closing permanently.
According to information from various sources, the department store announced in June 2024 that they are closing several of their 600 stores.
«Unfortunately, we cannot continue our current lease terms for these stores and have been unable to find suitable locations in the market», - JCPenney said in a statement. «We are grateful to our dedicated employees and loyal customers who have shopped at these locations for many years».
Despite recent store closures, JCPenney is not closing for good. In their 2024 statement, the retail chain noted that they will continue to work to make every dollar count for diverse American working families and invite them to shop at other JCPenney stores in the area and on JCPenney.com.
In February 2025, store closures in New Hampshire, Colorado, Idaho, and other states were confirmed. In a statement obtained by The U.S. Sun, the company acknowledged the challenges of closing a store.
«The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes, or other factors», - JCPenney said in a statement. «While we have no plans to significantly reduce the number of our stores, we expect that several JCPenney stores will close by mid-year».
According to various sources, there are over 600 JCPenney stores in the United States. It is unclear how many of them are closing, as JCPenney announced in February 2025 that they expect to close «several» of them by mid-year.
JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 and closed around 200 of its stores, Axios reports. The publication noted that the retail chain stated that its closures «are not related to the recent merger with Catalyst Brands», - referring to the 2025 merger with SPARC Group to create Catalyst Brands
