From «never Trump» to his vice presidential candidate in the upcoming election. Jay Dee Vance is ready to support the campaign of the former 45th president to «Make America Great Again».
James David Vance was born in Middletown, Ohio, on August 2, 1984. The 39-year-old joined the United States Marine Corps shortly after high school and became a combat correspondent. Jay Dee grew up in a family that faced poverty, low-paying jobs, and drug addiction, all of which he detailed in his memoir «Hillbillies: A Memoir of Family and Culture in Crisis».
The politician gave readers a glimpse into his childhood and the many challenges he had to face. «I was like many kids who grew up in that environment. I didn’t do particularly well in school, started experimenting with drugs and alcohol», - he said during an interview with the Hoover Institute in 2016.
He noted in his memoir: «We didn’t live a peaceful life in a small nuclear family. We lived a chaotic life in large groups of aunts, uncles, grandmothers, and grandfathers».
James recalled that the reason his culture may have a dependence on opioids is due to the economy. He said in an interview with Channel 4 News in 2016: «The economy in this region [Kentucky] was very hard hit, you know, these are areas that relied on coal mines, steel mills, and other manufacturing industries that just no longer exist or at least don’t exist in the same volume to support the local economy. So what happened was, as people lost their jobs, people lost hope. They really, I think, in some sense, turned to other habits or other things to try to numb that pain».
«That's a big part of where this opioid crisis comes from, it’s not just people who like drugs or want to be addicted to drugs. It’s that they’re really trying to find something to do, something to numb that pain that comes from living in areas that are really struggling»
