During the debates between the vice presidential candidates in 2024, J.D. Vance and Tim Walz, viewers noticed that J.D.'s wife, Usha, came on stage when he and Tim were shaking hands. She has become a constant presence during the current race for the White House, supporting her husband at various events, including the Republican National Convention last summer.

Addressing a large crowd at the RNC, Usha noted that her background «differs greatly from J.D.'s».

«I grew up in San Diego, in a middle-class community, with two loving parents, both immigrants from India, and a wonderful sister», - Usha confessed, adding: «The fact that J.D. and I could even meet, let alone fall in love and get married, is a testament to this great country».

Learn more about Usha, her marriage to J.D., and their children below.

Usha Vance (nee Chilukuri) was born in San Diego County, California, on January 6, 1986. Her family belongs to the Telugu Brahmin community. They moved to the United States in the 1980s from India, and Usha’s parents speak Telugu. They raised her in the upper middle-class Rancho Penasquitos area of San Diego.

While studying at Yale Law School, Usha studied history and was an active member of various campus associations, such as the Yale Law Journal, as well as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa sorority.

After college, Usha worked as a judicial clerk in several federal courts, including Brett Kavanaugh’s.

Reports indicate that Usha voted in the Democratic primaries in 2014, but voted in the Republican primaries in 2022 when her husband was a candidate.

Usha and J.D. met while attending Yale Law School. According to the Daily Beast, the couple’s professor, Amy Chua, encouraged them to get closer in their relationship. Usha and J.D. eventually married in 2014 during a ceremony in Kentucky.

J.D. has spoken about his family. In his speech at the Republican National Convention in July 2024, the vice presidential candidate for Donald Trump noted that his «most important American dream was to be a good husband and father» and that he «wanted to give his children what he did not have growing up».

Addressing his children, J.D. joked: «If you’re watching, Daddy loves you very much, but go to bed, it’s already ten o’clock».

Usha and J.D. are raising three children together: Euan, Vivek, and Mirabelle Vance. The spouses welcomed Euan in June 2017, followed by Vivek in February 2020, and Mirabelle in December 2021
