A Florida resident, Joanne Baker, killed her husband, police officer John Baker, and then took her own life in an apparent murder-suicide. Their bodies were discovered in their home in Pembroke Pines on the morning of September 21. Preliminary reports indicate that Joanne, 59, shot John, 62, before taking her own life.
John Baker previously served as a sergeant in the Pembroke Pines Police Department but retired after a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2019. Following the accident, he sustained serious injuries that affected his speech and movement. Nevertheless, through determination and the support of his family and medical team, John was able to regain limited motor skills and continued to actively participate in community life, including involvement in charitable events.
Joanne assisted John in his recovery and even documented his journey in a Facebook group called «John's Prayer Army» and on a GoFundMe page. She noted that John regularly expressed gratitude for the care he received and apologized for what had happened.
The couple had three children, and the police department remembered John as a «devoted father». Authorities have not yet indicated whether they believe there was any motive behind this incident.
