Similar to the results from the Tokyo Olympics, women from the USA team took more than half of the gold medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
On Saturday, August 10, the thrilling victory of the USA women’s soccer team over Brazil added an exclamation point to what were already fantastic Olympic Games for American women.
In an emotional interview after the game with NBC’s Mike Tirico, USA team head coach Emma Hayes praised the resilience of her players. «We became more aggressive as the game went on. I encouraged that», - she said. «The heart, determination, perseverance — everything in these players is so incredible. I am so proud of them».
For the fourth consecutive Summer Olympics, women from the USA will win more medals than men. By the start of Saturday evening, American women had won 58 percent of the total medals for the USA. Even halfway through the Paris Games, Christine Brennan from USA TODAY speculated that American female athletes were «on track to win more medals than American male athletes» for the fourth straight Summer Games.
Before the final competition of the Games, the USA team was trailing China by one gold medal.
China defended its 40th gold medal on Sunday in the women’s 81 kg weightlifting, as Li Wenwen defended her Olympic title from Tokyo. This left the USA with 39 gold medals before the final event — the gold medal game in women’s basketball between the USA and France.
The USA team won this game in a dramatic fashion, leading to a tie in the gold medal table.
«I saw the medal count ahead of time. I thought, 'This is what we need, more pressure,'» said USA head coach Cheryl Reeve after the game.
Out of the 40 gold medals won by the USA team, 26 were won by women, meaning that women were responsible for 65% of the USA team’s gold medals at the Olympics in Paris.
This result means that half of the USA team outperformed full teams from around 200 other countries, including 85 countries that won at least one medal. The leaders in terms of gold medals were Japan with 20, Australia with 18, and France with 16.
Compared to the previous Games, out of the 39 gold medals won by America in Tokyo, women were responsible for 23.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, women’s participation was 47.8% - the closest to gender balance at the Games. However, at the Paris Games, for the first time in Olympic history, there was full gender equality, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allocated 50% of quota places to women and 50% to men
