Jim Acosta, CNN’s chief domestic correspondent, announced today that he is leaving the network where he has worked since 2007. Find out why this experienced journalist is leaving and whether he was fired.
Jim Acosta (real name Abilio James Acosta) grew up in Virginia and received his education at James Madison University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a minor in political science. He worked at a radio station in Washington before transitioning to television, working as a reporter at various stations in Chicago, Dallas, and Fort Worth before joining CBS News as a correspondent.
In 2007, he joined CNN. He was promoted to national political correspondent in 2012, rose through the ranks to become the chief White House correspondent in 2018, and was appointed chief domestic correspondent and weekend anchor — his last role at the well-known network.
Jim once engaged in a memorable exchange of views with President Donald Trump during a press conference in 2018. During the live broadcast, Trump angrily walked away from the podium, wagging his finger and telling the stunned reporter that CNN «should be ashamed» to have him working for them. «You are a rude, terrible person, you shouldn’t be working for CNN», - Trump said during the heated exchange.
Jim Acosta was not fired from CNN. However, during a network program review, he was offered an option that he did not consider acceptable.
According to the New York Post, his 10 a.m. morning show was recently replaced by «The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown». CNN offered him the midnight program, right before Donald Trump’s inauguration — an option he deemed unacceptable. «You may have seen some reports about me and this program, and after careful consideration and weighing the alternative time slot that was offered to me at CNN, I decided to move on», - he said on air on Tuesday, January 28.
According to Fox News, he also had strong parting words regarding press freedom. «I've always believed that the press’s job is to hold power to account», - he said. «I've always tried to do that here at CNN. I plan to do that going forward. One last message — don’t give in to false assertions. Don’t give in to fear. Hold onto the truth. And to hope, even if you have to take out your phone, record this message. I will not give in to false assertions. I will not give in to fear. Post this on your social media so people can hear you too. Until then, I want to thank all of you for watching. It’s been an honor to be welcomed into your home all these years».
The network also expressed gratitude to the journalist for his service in an official statement. «Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a history of standing up to power, for the First Amendment, and for our journalistic freedoms», - the statement read, according to the New York Post. «We want to thank him for the dedication and diligence he brought to his work, and wish him all the best in the future»
