South Carolina woman charged with murdering her daughters
A South Carolina resident, Justin Marie May, is accused of the involuntary manslaughter of her two daughters, who were found dead in her home. According to the arrest warrant provided by the Charleston County Sheriff, May told detectives that she had been in a «fog» for the past two weeks and could not remember the last time she fed her children, who were 1 and 2 years old.

On September 29, during a welfare check, law enforcement officers and a social worker visited a home in Ladson, where May came outside «crying and speaking incoherently». Upon entering the house, they discovered that the girls were «obviously dead». Charleston County Coroner, Bobby Joe O’Neil, determined that the cause of death was starvation and dehydration due to neglect.

Charleston County Sheriff, Karl Ritchie, stated on October 1 that the deaths of the two «innocent children» were «senseless». Prior to their deaths, law enforcement had visited May’s home 13 times from August 10 for various calls but found no signs of distress.

During questioning, May acknowledged that not feeding the children constitutes neglect and that she had been the sole caregiver for the girls in the weeks leading up to their deaths. Reports indicate that her family had expressed concern about her condition and the well-being of her daughters before their deaths. One of the letters from relatives mentioned the high-profile case of Lindsay Clancy, a woman from Massachusetts who recently faced trial for the murder of her three children.

Information on whether May has hired an attorney has not yet been released in court documents. Her first court appearance is scheduled for November 20. May is currently in custody. Sheriff Ritchie expressed condolences to the family and friends affected by the tragedy.
