How Kirsten Comerford became a multi-talent in the world of entertainment

The world of entertainment has become increasingly diverse and open over the past few decades. Where there used to be rigid barriers between spheres of work, such as theater and film, or between actors, producers, and directors, now the boundaries have become much more flexible. Multi-talented creators are much more common, such as Donald Glover, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Michaela Coel, who write, direct, and act in their works, helping to carve out a unique place for themselves in the world of entertainment. One such multi-talented creator of modern entertainment is Kirsten Comerford, a stage and screen actress who has achieved tremendous success in recent years.
In Comerford’s own words: «I see myself as a storyteller». Growing up in St. John’s, Newfoundland, a place known for its vibrant arts scene and rich storytelling heritage, Comerford spent a lot of time listening to stories about her hometown during the war and the entire history of Newfoundland.
From the very beginning, she found ballet to be an incredibly powerful form of self-expression. It wasn’t long before her love for ballet turned into a desire to be in theater, and then in film. One of Comerford’s first experiences on stage was in the original workshop production of the hit Broadway musical «Come From Away». Set in Newfoundland, «Come From Away» was a theatrical embodiment of all the stories that had inspired Comerford in her youth. She says it remains «one of my most cherished experiences in the industry».
Since the end of «Come From Away», - Comerford has worked as a professional actress, facing all the unique challenges and difficulties that come with these roles. «Constant rejection is something that definitely requires a thick skin. I think it took me some time to develop that. It’s important to separate yourself and your personality from your art and your aspirations. Acting is so personal; you share yourself, it’s vulnerable, it’s real truths that you comment on through your work, and so it can be difficult to see it as a business rather than a personal rejection».
But despite all this, Comerford persisted and achieved success on her own terms. She directed and starred in a short film that won the audience choice award at a comedy film festival. In addition to this short film, Comerford has built a connection and collaboration with Roxanne Bouver, a powerful female director, who has worked on several projects with her.
As Comerford says: «In my journey through the industry, I have worked on many sets and met many talented people, but it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to collaborate with Roxanne Bouver that I truly experienced a transformative shift in my career — one that left a huge impact on my path forward».
In Bouver, Comerford found a director and collaborator who «has an innate ability to connect with actors on a deep level». Under her guidance, Comerford took on her first leading role in a feature film. She notes: «I felt confident in the work I had done, and was free to take risks and immerse myself in the character. It was extremely collaborative, and the feeling that my opinion was valued was a turning point for me in my career».
After completing several films with Bouver, Comerford found that she was able to embrace her own role «not only as an actress, but as an evolving creative force in the industry. This drive for acting has allowed me not only to explore new paths of self-expression, but also strengthened my status as a talent worth paying attention to — ready to innovate and collaborate in a constantly changing landscape»
