Lady Gaga freely sang in French when she opened the Paris Olympic Games on Friday, July 26. But this was not the first time the versatile singer and actress spoke in this language. How did the pop star learn to speak French?
Gaga — real name: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — is American and was born into an Italian-American family in New York.
In high school, Gaga was accepted into the music school of the New York University Collaborative Arts Project 21, where she studied music. She also delved into topics of politics, social issues, and religion, developing her songwriting skills. After one semester, Gaga left to focus on her pop career.
Although she did not study French in college, Gaga performed several songs in this language. In the movie «A Star is Born», - she sang «La Vie en Rose» at the beginning of the film when Bradley Cooper’s character first meets her.
While attending an all-girls Catholic school, the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York, Gaga studied French, as she previously told Stephen Colbert.
The «Love Game» artist also expressed her feelings on X’s page after her performance at the Olympics, writing: «Although I am not a French artist, I have always felt a very special connection with the French people and singing French music — I wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the hearts of France, celebrate French art and music, and in such a significant moment remind everyone of one of the most magical cities on earth — Paris. We rented pom-poms from the Lido archive — a real French cabaret theater».
«I feel so grateful to have been asked to open the 2024 Paris Olympic Games», - Gaga continued. «I am also humbly grateful to the Olympic committee for asking me to sing such a special French song — a song to honor the French people and their immense history of art, music, and theater».
