What does it take to become a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader? The new Netflix documentary series «American Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders» answers this question, providing viewers — and cheerleading fans — with a detailed look at the blood, sweat, and tears required to join the elite team. From auditions to sacrifices and the aftermath of their grueling training, the truth about DCC is revealed in this new documentary.
Hollywood Life journalists have gathered all the information you need to know about «American Sweethearts» below.
According to Netflix, the synopsis reads: «Since 1961, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders have captivated audiences with their dynamic dance, becoming an iconic squad both on and off the field. On June 20, the globally recognized DCC step aside and take center stage in „American Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,“ a series that reveals what it takes — what it really takes — to step into those bright white knee-high boots».
In addition to a strict training and performance schedule, the documentary also explores the personal lives of squad members, from sweet moments to domestic struggles.
«American Sweethearts» was directed by «Cheer» filmmaker Greg Whiteley, who told Netflix: «The kind of access and creative freedom we need to create the work we want to do is not easy to come by — especially when it comes to such a major brand like the Dallas Cowboys. To their endless credit, the Cowboys gave us unlimited access for a year while we filmed DCC, and left us alone. The result is an authentic portrait of one of the most famous and beloved institutions we have in American pop culture».
The seven episodes of the documentary series were released on Netflix on June 20.
While there is no confirmation of a second season yet, Greg told Variety that he would «love to» explore more about the team if given the opportunity.
«I felt like we were just scratching the surface when we finished filming», - the director said. «And I would love to have more time to see if we can dive deeper and deeper into more and more of the team»
