Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine successfully presented one of the most popular romantic movies of the year. Based on the book by Robin Lee with the same name, «The Idea of You» was released on Prime Video on May 2, and the ending of the film differs quite a bit from the original story. The actors and crew fueled the audience’s interest in the book, but many fans haven’t even read it! So how does the book end compared to the movie?

Hollywood Life broke down the differences between the movie «The Idea of You» and the book!

Nicholas’s character, Hayes Campbell, and Anne’s character, Solene Marchand, fall in love and cannot stay apart. Despite everything, the 40-year-old single mother and the 24-year-old boy band superstar briefly break up in the middle of the film due to a misunderstanding. The guys from the band August Moon tell Solene that Hayes used the song «Closer» with other women before her, and she leaves Europe, telling him that she is «ashamed» to be with him because of the age difference.

After paparazzi photos and tabloid headlines threaten to humiliate her, Solene later apologizes to Hayes for what she said, and they quickly make up. However, they still cannot be together for one reason: Solene’s daughter, Izzy, is being harassed and bullied by her peers because of her mother’s relationship. Solene and Hayes agree to part ways by the end of the film, and they exchange a final kiss after emotional «I love you"s.

However, viewers should not lose hope. Hayes asks Solene to reconsider their relationship in five years, when Izzy goes off to college. In the film’s epilogue, Solene switches channels on the TV one night and comes across an interview with Hayes. Hayes reveals that he is now a solo artist and is returning to Los Angeles to visit someone, but never reveals who. Shortly before this, Solene and Hayes meet at her art gallery.

The film ends with a tearful but happy reaction from Solene upon seeing Hayes. Although viewers do not know if they will actually get back together, it is clear that they still have strong feelings for each other.

The book «The Idea of You» has a completely different ending than the film, and it broke readers' hearts. Solene actually ends her romance with Hayes because they are in different phases of their lives. However, Hayes shows up at Solene’s doorstep a few weeks later to tell her that he has left August Moon. However, Solene tells him that he cannot end his career because of her.

They still meet, but Solene lies to Hayes, telling him that she never really loved him — only the idea of him. Hayes returns to his group, but still writes to her, saying that he loves her. Ignoring him for months, the book ends with Solene admitting: «And then one day, [the messages] stopped. Much sooner than I stopped loving him».

Director Michael Showalter understood that viewers watching their film needed more hope than they got from the book. Speaking to RadioTimes.com, the director explained why they made a different ending.

«For me, it was more like as a director and a fan of romantic comedies and romantic movies, it felt like this was a movie where we wanted to give the audience a hopeful ending», - he explained. «We could have ended the movie differently, of course. But for this story, we felt that a more uplifting ending would be most satisfying for our audience. And ultimately, the audience is the most important when creating a film of this kind»
