Former «American Idol» contestant Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. The sentence was handed down on September 29, after jurors found him guilty of killing 37-year-old Ashley while he was involved in a romantic relationship with a former intern from his church.
Before the sentencing, 40-year-old Caleb addressed the court and, in tears, apologized to his family for the murder. He stated, «I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I did not uphold those vows. I cannot apologize enough». Despite admitting that he had lied about many issues, Flynn maintained his innocence, asserting, «I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife».
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Caleb staged a robbery in February after shooting Ashley. They convinced jurors that he attempted to cover up his crime by claiming that Ashley was killed by an intruder. In closing arguments, prosecutors stated that Caleb wanted to end the marriage when he shot Ashley, and that their two daughters were at home with their father when police arrived at the scene.
The day before the murder, Caleb allegedly sent a message to his mistress saying, «I choose you. I am free. Actions will happen tomorrow». Former intern Alleigha Botner, who served as a key witness for the prosecution, testified that she met Caleb in 2022 when she was 20 years old. She claimed that their romance lasted over a year and that Caleb told her he hated his wife and thought about killing her. Prosecutors also presented the jury with AI-generated love songs that they claimed Caleb wrote for Botner during their relationship.
Despite his persistent claims of innocence, Flynn did not testify in his own defense during the trial. Caleb previously participated in the 12th season of «American Idol», - although he was eliminated before the live performances. He noted that Ashley supported his pursuit of a music career.
