California has declared a state of emergency due to a recent outbreak of bird flu. As residents grapple with this news, many are learning more about the virus — how to recognize signs and symptoms, and where the infection originated, among the main questions.

Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement regarding the outbreak, stating: «This declaration is a deliberate action to ensure that state agencies have the resources and flexibility needed to respond quickly to this outbreak. Based on California’s testing and monitoring system — the largest in the country — we are committed to further protecting public health, supporting our agricultural industry, and providing access to accurate, up-to-date information for California residents. While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus».

Bird flu is a virus, also known as avian influenza. Viral infection mainly affects birds, but in rare cases can be transmitted to humans.

The infection is caused by influenza type A viruses and can be transmitted to domestic birds.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of bird flu include red eyes, upper respiratory symptoms, pneumonia requiring hospitalization, fever of 100ºF and above, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, and/or difficulty breathing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also note that fever is not always present.

A person can become infected if they come into contact with an infected bird or birds. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people should avoid touching surfaces contaminated with infected materials from birds or other animals suspected of having bird flu.

Earlier this year, Raw Farm LLC in Fresno, California, attracted attention after recalls were announced in connection with its raw milk samples.

Bird flu can be treated with antiviral medications such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza), according to Mount Sinai
