Former Vice President Kamala Harris returned to public attention almost a year later, after she accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. Former President Joe Biden then withdrew his candidacy, effectively starting her 107-day campaign against Donald Trump. Now, Harris is promoting her new book «107 Days» and appeared on the Stephen Colbert show to discuss why she will not be running for governor of California. But will Harris be able to run for president in 2028?

Below, we will break down everything Harris said and what it means for her political future.

Harris confirmed in a public statement that she will not be pursuing a candidacy for governor of California. In her statement on July 30, 2025, the former vice president wrote that she seriously considered asking the people of California for the privilege of serving them as governor, calling the state her home and adding that she loves the people.

«But after deep reflection, I have decided not to run for governor in this election», - Harris wrote.

Acknowledging that she has «admiration and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service», - the Democrat added that as a nation, «we must recognize that our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, reaching this crisis point».

«Looking ahead, we must be prepared to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking — committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook», - Harris wrote, concluding, «Until my leadership — and public service — is in an elected office. I look forward to the opportunity to go out and listen to the American people again, help elect Democrats across the country who will fight fearlessly, and in the coming months, I will share a lot of details about my own plans».

It seems that Harris will not be running for president in 2028. Based on her public statement, she insists that her public service «will not be in an elected office». She confirmed this during her appearance on the Stephen Colbert show on July 31, 2025.

«I recently made the decision that I don’t want to return to the system yet», - Harris said, adding that today the system is «broken».

«I have always believed that our democracy, though fragile, our systems will be strong enough to protect our most fundamental principles», - she continued. «And I think right now they are not as strong as they should be. And I just don’t want, not yet — I don’t want to return to the system… I want to travel the country, I want to listen to people, I want to talk to people, and I don’t want it to be transactional, where I ask for their votes».

Colbert then insisted, saying that it seems like she is giving up on politics, to which she replied, «Oh, absolutely not. I will always be part of the fight».

The book «107 Days» will be released on September 23, 2025. The book provides a look at Harris' campaign lasting several weeks in her fight for the presidency in 2024 after Biden declined to seek re-election
