Vice President Kamala Harris promised that she will «earn and win» her nomination from the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden announced his decision to step out of the race. Hours after the 81-year-old president made the historic decision to not run for re-election, Harris, 59, posted her own statement on social media.

«On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his outstanding leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country», - she wrote on Sunday, July 21. «It is an honor to have the President’s support, and it is my intention to earn and win this nomination».

In a subsequent tweet, Harris wrote that she will «do everything possible to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extremist 2025 agenda».

Hours before this, Biden announced his departure from the 2024 presidential race. In an official statement published on July 21, the president wrote, «Serving the American people has been the greatest honor of my life».

«And while my intention was to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country for me to step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president until the end of my term», - Biden added. «I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America cannot do — when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America».

Biden’s decision to step down came after several weeks of calls from many Democrats and countless Americans for him to do so. During a televised debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump in June, viewers saw Biden stumble over his words. However, the White House defended him and promised that he would continue to fight for re-election.

Throughout June and July, Biden appeared in several television interviews and press conferences, where he insisted that he was not leaving the presidential race. Nevertheless, many news outlets continued to speculate whether Harris would be chosen to replace him as the Democratic candidate for 2024
