Vice President Kamala Harris officially became the Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2024 elections. The 59-year-old Harris secured her place in the race on Friday, August 2, and made history as the first black and Asian-American woman to become a party nominee. She received a majority of votes from at least 2,350 Democratic Party delegates.
At this point in her campaign, Harris has received over $ 300 million in donations. Additionally, many celebrities and Democratic colleagues continue to express their support for the former prosecutor.
Harris released a statement through social media after her nomination was announced. In a tweet, she wrote, «It is an honor to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people united by love for the country, fighting for the best in us».
Last month, Harris began her journey to the White House after President Joe Biden declined to participate in the re-elections. After several weeks of public calls from members of his party and other public figures to withdraw from the race, the 81-year-old politician announced his support for his vice president.
«My first decision as a party candidate in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it was the best decision I made», - Biden wrote on July 21. «Today, I want to express my full support and endorsement of Kamala as our party’s candidate this year».
Shortly after that, Harris embarked on her campaign and promised to «earn and win» her nomination. She is running against Republican candidate Donald Trump, who publicly criticizes Harris for her political beliefs, behavior, and more.
In response, Harris, 78, promised that her campaign is «about two different visions of our nation», - according to a message through X. «Our vision is focused on the future. Donald Trump’s vision is focused on the past. We will not go back».
Ahead of the Democratic National Committee convention, Harris is in the process of selecting her vice-presidential candidate. Many speculate about top contenders, such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, or Senator Mark Kelly — all of whom immediately endorsed her after Harris entered the race
