Vice President Kamala Harris outlined her economic plans for the United States, which she called «the economy of opportunities». During a speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday, August 16, the 59-year-old Democrat emphasized that if elected president in November, she will prioritize the middle class.

«I know what home ownership means. It’s more than a financial transaction. It’s much more», - Harris explained. «It's a symbol of hard-earned pride. It’s financial security. It represents what you can do for your children».

Pointing out that home ownership is «out of reach for too many American families», - Harris noted that as president, she plans to «work in partnership with the industry to build the housing we need for both renting and buying».

Harris also highlighted her socio-economic background, noting that her family «rented homes». Recalling her past work at McDonald’s, the former prosecutor acknowledged her former colleagues who supported their families by working multiple jobs.

«They worked second or third jobs to pay rent or buy food», - Harris said, pointing out that «it becomes harder as the cost of living rises… Bills add up: food, rent, gas, back-to-school clothes, prescription drugs. After all that, many families don’t have much left at the end of the month».

Elsewhere in her speech, the Oakland, California native stated that the current presidential election «is about two very different visions of our nation». Harris then called out her opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump, accusing him of plans to «bankrupt the middle class, punish workers, and increase the cost of living for millions of Americans».

«I will provide more details about my plans to create an economy of opportunities, and today I will focus on one element that concerns many Americans when they pay bills at the kitchen table or walk through the grocery store aisles, and that is lowering the cost of living», - Harris added.

Harris' campaign gained momentum shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month. Weeks before his announcement, Democrats and celebrities urged the 81-year-old to end his participation in the race. Many pointed to his age as an issue.

As the race for the White House continues, Harris and Trump, 78, have scheduled their long-awaited debate for Thursday, September 10
