Vice President Kamala Harris surprised viewers with a short speech during the first evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. On Monday, August 19, the 59-year-old politician took the stage to Beyoncé's song «Freedom» to praise President Joe Biden before his speech later that evening.

«It's going to be a wonderful week, and I want to start by acknowledging our incredible president, Joe Biden, who will be speaking later tonight», - Kamala said to an enthusiastic crowd in Chicago. «Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifelong service to our nation, and for everything you will continue to do, we are eternally grateful to you. Thank you, Joe!»

The former attorney general also pointed out the «beauty of our great nation» as she addressed the audience.

«People from every corner of our country and from all walks of life here are united by our common vision for the future of our country», - Kamala said, adding, «And this November, we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people, we are moving forward».

«Let's always remember that when we fight, we win», - she said.

Throughout the evening, many Democrats and others spoke in support of Kamala in her bid for the White House. Prominent speakers included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett, as well as Joe’s daughter, Ashley Biden.

While all the speakers described Kamala’s campaign goals, they also thanked 81-year-old Joe for his decades of work in politics. After taking the podium, Joe insisted that Kamala and her vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz, would «continue to lead America forward, creating more jobs, protecting workers' rights, growing the economy, and reducing costs for American families».

«I have five months left in my presidency. I have a lot to do. I intend to do it. It has been the honor of my life to serve as your president. I love my job, but I love my country more. For those who have said I should leave, that’s not the case. We love our country more, and we need to preserve our democracy»
