Google CEO Sundar Pichai has been overseeing major contributions to the technological platform since the early 2000s. Now, as he appears to be among the big figures of the tech industry, such as Donald Trump, Americans — and the rest of the world — are curious to learn more about Pichai’s career.
Below are five facts about Pichai and his time at Google, gathered by Hollywood Life.
As Alphabet Inc. oversees Google, Pichai serves as the CEO of both Google and Alphabet. Google Inc. existed as a standalone company from 1998 until the restructuring in 2015.
Pichai was born and raised in India. Eventually, he moved to the United States to pursue his career in technology.
The Google CEO is married to Anjali Pichai, and they have two children. While Pichai is a prominent figure in the tech industry, his family leads a modest lifestyle.
After joining the Google team in 2004, Pichai oversaw the development of several products on the platform, including Gmail and Google Maps. In February 2020, Pichai wrote a public comment reflecting on the journey of Google Maps.
«Maps not only make it easier to get around; they can also give you a sense of identity when you first see your street on the map», - Pichai wrote on the occasion of Google Maps' 15th anniversary. «This was one of the discoveries of MapMaker. Launched by two Google engineers in 2008, it was a way for people to add streets and local landmarks to enhance the Google Maps experience, starting in India. It quickly evolved to help map floods in the Philippines and Pakistan, and then allowed people in the US to add a new road in their area».
In his blog, Pichai pointed out one of the «next frontiers for Maps», - which involved helping «billions of people living without a physical address to get digital». He continued, explaining that with a digital address, «more people will be able to access things like banking and emergency services, receive personal mail and deliveries, as well as help people find and visit their businesses».
Five years later, Google Maps drew global attention when they updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the «Gulf of America» for users in the US. People in other countries, besides the US and Mexico, saw the gulf renamed to «Mexican Gulf (Gulf of America)». This update aligned with the actions of the Trump administration to change the name of this body of water.
In January 2025, Pichai was one of many tech titans present at Trump’s second inauguration. Along with him, Tesla founder and X owner Elon Musk and Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg were also in attendance
