The number of casualties at the time of publication is still unknown, but local residents and several media outlets reported that rescuers were finding victims' bodies at the scene. According to the Associated Press, it was officially stated that «there are no known survivors».

«It appears that there are no survivors in the plane crash», - said police commissioner G. S. Malik to AP. «Since the plane crashed in a residential area where there were also offices, some local residents may have also perished. The exact number of casualties is being determined».

As for the victims on the ground, local Indian TV channels reported that the plane hit the top of the dining hall in the medical college dormitory. It is unclear whether students were in the building at the time of the collision.

The exact cause of the Air India plane crash has not yet been determined, but John M. Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems, told AP that the plane appeared to have crashed nose up and did not climb.

«At this point it’s very, very, very early, we don’t know much», - he explained. «But the 787 has very extensive flight data monitoring — there are thousands of parameters on the flight data recorder — so once we get that recorder, they should be able to quickly find out what happened».

The Air India crash in June 2025 was the first crash of a Boeing 787 aircraft. However, the company has faced serious obstacles with its 737 Max planes in recent years due to production and safety issues. One of the most well-known incidents was when an emergency exit of a flight opened during the flight.

The last major passenger plane crash in India occurred in 2020, when a Boeing 737 Air India Express skidded off the runway on a hill. Twenty-one people were killed, according to multiple sources.

In response to the Air India crash, Boeing released a statement through X, saying: «We are in touch with Air India regarding flight 171 and are ready to provide them with support. Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders, and all those affected»
