Kawhi Leonard will officially not be playing in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Today, officials announced the update of the USA basketball team roster for the 2024 Olympics, publishing this decision on social media. Regarding the star of the Los Angeles Clippers and forward of the USA team, they explained:

«Kawhi has been preparing for the Olympics for the past few weeks and has had several successful training sessions in Las Vegas», - the statement from USA Basketball reads. «He felt ready for the competition. However, he respects the decision of USA Basketball and the Clippers, who have decided that it is better for him to spend the rest of the summer preparing for the upcoming season rather than participating in the Olympic Games in Paris».

Shortly before this, the USA Basketball accounts welcomed 30-year-old Derrick White, writing: «Derrick White joins 🇺🇸 #USABMNT for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris».

For some time, the 33-year-old athlete has been struggling with knee inflammation during the regular season and was seen limping on his injured knee during the Los Angeles defeat in the first round of the playoffs against the eventual Western Conference champions, the Dallas Mavericks.

Leonard stated on Tuesday that he planned to play in the first exhibition game of the USA team against Team Canada, but noted that his knee is in a «neutral» state. He also mentioned that he has been rehabbing his knee for the past two months and was unsure if he could play until he felt improvement two weeks ago.

The player, who is set to begin a three-year, $ 150 million contract with the Clippers, was unable to finish the last two playoffs due to issues with his right knee. In total, the two-time NBA champion and six-time All-NBA player has missed 256 regular-season games over the past seven years, including the entire 2021−22 season due to knee problems.

As for the replacement, White seems to have been chosen over New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, who was named to the All-NBA second team last season as one of the league’s top players.

White averaged 15.2 points per game and had a three-point shooting percentage of 39.6% with the same number of attempts per game.

Although White may have been chosen for his defensive prowess, which contributed to the Celtics' victory in the NBA, Jalen Brunson could have been an excellent candidate. However, he is still recovering from a left hand fracture sustained in the sixth game against the Indiana Pacers
