Kelsey Grammer has been struggling with the loss of his sister, Karen Grammer, for decades. But now the star of the show «Cheers» is opening up about his late sister and dedicating his 2025 book «Karen: Brother’s Memories» to her. In the book, the actor takes readers back in time and through the consequences of Karen’s death.

«I don’t know why I spent so much time feeling like I wasn’t measuring up», - Kelsey said in a May 2025 interview with ABC News, referring to his sister. «I always felt like I was falling behind, a little bit off — not in the game, not quite up to par. And she always assured me that I was doing a good job, that I was a good brother».

Noting that he was the older child, Kelsey also told ABC that Karen was «braver» than them.

Karen, she had a whole life ahead of her. Describing his sister as «an Oreo dipped in ice-cold Coca-Cola», - the star of «Frasier» also called her «a poem, a light, fun, innocent, and wise» in his book.

«She wrote poetry and loved to live; we could laugh together for hours», - Kelsey wrote in his memoirs. «I was supposed to protect her — I couldn’t. I could never get over it. I was supposed to save her. I couldn’t. It almost destroyed me».

Karen was 18 years old when she was killed in July 1975.

In July 1975, Karen was living in Colorado and was abducted by several men who were trying to rob the restaurant where she worked. They took Karen to a trailer, raped and killed her, then an 18-year-old girl. One of Karen’s attackers, a man named Freddie Glenn, was found guilty of her murder in 1976 and is currently serving a life sentence in prison.

During the May 2025 interview with ABC, Kelsey admitted that «there were horrors in his mind that thirsted for the truth, for what he knew happened, and to feel her steps, her last steps, to be with her, to be with her». He then noted that the «mission» he is fulfilling by releasing his book is «healing».

«But the mission also involves helping to heal other people», - Kelsey added. «And by introducing them to Karen, I hope they reconnect with their lost loved ones in the same way. … I spent a lot of time on her death and very little on her life. And that’s what I hope people understand — spend time on the life you lost. Spend time on the life you shared, not on the day you lost it».
