Carrie Underwood is returning to American Idol, but this time she will be behind the judges' table. The 41-year-old country singer replaced former judge Katy Perry. It is expected that Carrie will appear alongside judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan in the upcoming season, which will air next year.
ABC announced the news on Thursday, August 1, with a video of Carrie on the show.
«I went from nobody knowing who I was to tens of millions of people watching the show», - she said. «I'm proud of everything I was able to achieve on the show, and I’m so proud of everything I’ve been able to achieve since then».
Host Ryan Seacrest also confirmed the news in a tweet, writing: «It's a full circle moment to go from announcing you as the winner of American Idol 20 years ago to welcoming you behind the judges' table. Welcome home, Carrie Underwood!»
According to Deadline, before ABC decided to choose Carrie, other major music artists were considered. Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were options, according to the publication.
Carrie is one of the most popular former Idol contestants. After participating in the fourth season, the «Blown Away» artist skyrocketed to fame. Many future contestants even auditioned by performing her songs. Carrie has sold 85 million records worldwide and has received eight Grammy Awards, 17 American Music Awards, 10 People’s Choice Awards, and seven CMA Awards throughout her career.
Earlier this year, Katy, 39, announced her departure from the reality show. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February, the «Wide Awake» artist explained that she loves the show but wants to explore other opportunities as an artist.
«I think this will probably be my last season for Idol», - she said. «I love Idol so much. It’s connected to me like the heart of America. But I feel like I need to step out and feel that pulse, that pulse of my own rhythm»
